Drive east to Glenwood Springs through Glenwood Canyon Since you don't want that long of a drive from Denver , and with your base concept, you could slowly west from Denver on Interstate 70, then drive back to Denver on you last day or the day before your flight. If you stay in Golden as your first base, you can go tubing in Clear Creek. Nearby Clear Creek County has a tourist train, and many historical sites, including mine tours and gold panning for kids, and Mount Evans.
For the second base, go to Glenwood Springs. Plus it is close to hiking and rafting, and bicycle riding up the Colorado river bike path. It's also an easy drive to visit Aspen from Glenwood Springs. For the third base, go to Grand Junction , where Colorado National Monument is a nice place to visit. Many thanks for the excellent feedback.
A plan is emerging, I think. Just speaking from a kid perspective here, but I always thought that Estes Park was really fun as a kid. They have this HUGE outdoor playground which isn't that spectacular but as a kid I thought it was the best.

Colorado Springs would be a great choice as one of your "bases" for a few days, and not far from Denver. Oh, and if you end up staying anywhere near Denver you should take a day to go to Waterworld. It's on the north side of Denver and is probably the most fun place for kids in all of Denver if they like swimming type of stuff. I think the cost is reasonable, the food isn't as expensive as some other theme parks They let you bring in your own food if you want to and there is a great variety in rides and pools there.
When I was a kid I would lie awake in anticipation on the nights before we were going to Waterworld: Of course, all of this comes from a gal who grew up in Colorado where we have tiny cold lakes and nothing with waves;. I would suggest staying in west Denver. This area is quite historic, and was called "the richest square mile on earth" for the Gold mined there. One of the nicer day trips is the peak to peak highway from Blackhawk to Estes Park. You can backtrack to Denver, or just keep going, making the full circle down to Winter Park and back to Denver.
That being said, it is definitely a full day.

Great pizza at Beaujo's, and great beer at Tommyknocker Brewery. Heading south out of Idaho Springs, you can hook up with the Mount Evans auto road. The views from the top of Mt. Evans are great, and this road is actually higher than the Pikes Peak Drive. There is a lot of history incorporated in Leadville. They also have a tourist train and mining museum. This is the highest incorporated town in the US. Great views, and most people with kids stop during the trip at he top of the pass so the kids can play in the snow.
